Burberry A/W2021 Campaign

Sorcha Ní Cheallaigh finds out that Burberry's new campaign for A/W2021 comes from two different perspectives.

With the wistful electronic sounds of Italian producer Robert Concina, the Burberry A/W2021 campaign curates a surreal duality that responds to issues both contemporary and timeless.  The campaign splices stark studio stills shot by Mert and Marcus with gold-themed backstage moments captured by Chris Rhodes during the collection’s A/W2021 presentations. The clothes themselves transform through these opposing lenses, encouraging different viewpoints. “This season is very much about freedom of expression and the importance of exploring creativity,” states Burberry CCO Riccardo Tisci. “And so, for the campaign, I really wanted to build on these notions and have the collection captured from two different creative perspectives.” Despite the opposing creative lenses, the connection is palpable, with Burberry’s Global Beauty Director Isamaya Ffrench and stylist Katy England working across the shoots to create a sense of fluidity and synergy.

Homage is paid throughout to a uniquely British natural landscape. The opening shot of the campaign video lingers on the hare detail mohair teddy jacket.  A yearning for rural childhood is clearly evoked as the iconic notes of the 1996 dream trance classic ‘Children’ underscores model Rianne von Rompaey playing the tambourine to the music – her face obscured by the anthropomorphically surreal hare ear detachable hood.  Showcasing the women’s collection’s ‘femininity’ and men’s collection ‘escape’, the campaign video suggests notions of looming environmental issues, as well as contemporary topics of gender fluidity and societal togetherness amid natural differences.

The focus across this season’s new campaign is freedom and a celebration of individuality as an integral part of a greater society.  The film shifts seamlessly between moments of solitude and synchronized movements, celebrating those who break with convention in their journey towards building a better future for all.  Tisci’s Autumn/Winter will exemplify the company’s dedication to representing uniquely British craftsmanship in the context of the global stage, while equally setting to stage for a new conversation within fashion.
