Molly Goddard AW23 – London Fashion Week

With the globe’s fashion fanatics descending on London for Fashion Week, the capital city becomes a buzzing hive of shows and events celebrating Britain’s design talent.  The spectacle is always a manic and thrilling ride.  But Molly Goddard wanted to step off this rollercoaster for AW23.  Spurred on by the simplicity of her early days studying at Central Saint Martins, her new collection raised a toast to teenage time wasting and playfully scouring shopping malls in pursuit of the unabashed “joy of dressing.”

Situated in her East London atelier, the show’s staging echoed the designer’s fondness for a stripped back narrative.  “The space is basic,” said Goddard in her show notes, but this latest catalogue was a layered, complex note to the pure passion of creativity.  The collection effortlessly captured the trademark maximalism that’s been prevalent since she established her label in 2014.Dual tone stripes ushered the show’s beginnings, emblazoned on tailored coats longline skirts and thoughtfully peppered throughout.  Additions of kaleidoscopic Fair Isle, Argyle and gathered knitwear extended the collection’s nod to easy wearability.Styled by her sister Alice, this family affair reminisced on trips to buy jeans at “Gap kids … and popper belts in Claire’s Accessories.”  Reinvented, this came crystallised in hardware-studded ballet slippers, calf-length boots and pragmatic Mary Janes.  Leopard print denim and ruched dresses furthered the rebellious streak searing through the every-day, ethereal aesthetic. Elsewhere, the designer’s recognisable swathes of tulle retained the fantasy while honing the theatre.  This time they came more understated compared to the tutu-like predecessors of the past, while refreshed A-line shaping and overlayed tunics played with a delicate femininity.Although inspired by her past, Molly Goddard AW23 was a crystal ball offering an exciting look into the bright future of British fashion.
