Massimo Giorgetti's crisp new MSGM collection re-interprets summer colours for 2020
During the last ten years that MSGM has been in existence as a luxury fashion brand it has built an ever-expanding reputation for being able to capture the contemporary mood of fashion and deliver inspiring visions through that exacting prism. Founder Massimo Giorgetti has become a master of this delivery and his new spring/summer collection for 2020 proves his credentials yet again.
Like a lot of catwalks for next summer, colour features heavily. But, while others have flirted with using it to shock to the point of manufactured rebellion, MSGM prefers to tell a story and suggest themes with their use of colour. So you will have the lemon yellow and chocolate brown single-breasted suits suggesting formality until you look closer to see the unusual fabric construction on one lapel.
Then at the other end of the scale you will find the oversized dresses and coats in a riot of pinks, greens and oranges that amplify their exaggerated feminine proportions.
In between those two points there was also a lot to love. The shocking pink calf-length skirt with the mesh hem created a fantastic silhouette with the bright green long sleeve mesh blouse. The use of colour worked really well when introducing some of the newer shapes on the catwalk. For example, the double-breasted jackets worn as short dresses featured unusual ruffled sleeves that worked best in shocking pink.
It was the colour that also popped as the crowning glory to the gorgeous little black peplum dress and the weaved half-length coat with the extraordinary long fringed hem.
The shift dresses came in a diversity of colour and sleeve combinations – from long sleeved in bright impressionistic floral explosions and three-quarter sleeves with flowers on solid black or beige, to plain solid blues and browns with puffed up shoulders. Everywhere you looked there was a clear narrative to follow. Similar looks changed in subtle but noticeable ways with each iteration, cleverly creating a variety of choice around a core of base staples. i.e., Giorgetti has once again delivered a marvellous vision of the summer through the prism of current contemporary fashion. Ten years later that’s still no mean feat.
