KARL LAGERFELD x Music

The new KARL LAGERFELD project that comes with its own soundtrack

One of the enduring parts of Karl Lagerfeld’s giant legacy in fashion is the way he was always able to re-interpret art and culture in his own vision and present it as something entirely new to the world.  Fortunately, the fashion house he left behind is committed to continuing the great man’s legacy with a recently launched innovative collaboration, KARL LAGERFELD x Music, with a trio of talented female DJs from different corners of the world.  England’s Siobhan Bell, Holland’s Chelina Manuhutu and America’s TOKiMONSTA have each been commissioned to edit their favourite styles from the KARL LAGERFELD A/W2020 collection and further personalise them with merchandise featuring their own logos and imagery.  And, in case anyone might wonder what Lagerfeld himself might have to say about such a collaboration, we always have his own words to refer back to:

Fashion is like music.  There are so many notes, you need to play around with them.  We all have to make our own tune.  Karl Lagerfeld

Naturally, just like the music they play, each of the DJ’s edits reflect their own personal creative sensibilities and aesthetics.  The UK is renowned for it’s street style and fashion, and that suits an artist like Siobhan Bell down to the ground.  So her edit included the reversible, black and white faux fur bomber sporting the KARL LAGERFELD ribbon logo, black faux patent leggings and the KARL SEVEN nano handbag in a sparkling finish to complement the R&B, Garage and Grime fuelled nightlife in her native London (or for whenever that nightlife might actually return to London).

Anybody who knows or has experienced the frenetic Ibiza club scene will appreciate Chelina Manuhutu’s more sporty edit of black tailored pants, black faux leather joggers and the K/Soho graffiti handbag and bumbag to keep all your credit cards, hotel room keys and club entry wristbands in.  Now an Ibiza resident, Manuhutu clearly knows how to combine style and practicality for travellers when they’re looking for that perfect beat.

Coming in at the other end of the spectrum, TOKiMONSTA combines one of the best DJ name’s in club history with her laid-back trance beats for an edit that includes a grey cotton jersey sweatshirt with voluminous sleeves, matching pants and the K/Kushion folded tote (the days of needed your hands free to carry your record boxes have long gone).  All three DJs have curated a personal KARL LAGERFELD playlist as the soundtrack to their collaborations and all three edits pointedly highlight the way KARL LAGERFELD collections can be personalised and individualised for any creative outlook; a fact that is not lost on the house itself:

This project celebrates powerful creatives who showcase their individuality.  For us it’s an exciting way to continue honouring Karl’s love for collaboration and music in particular. We are inspired by how each DJ expresses her own personal style, distinct sound and original inspirations, and connects with her audience in a unique way.  – Pier Paolo Righi, CEO of KARL LAGERFELD
