The Gucci Pineapple Collection

Alessandro Michele introduces a new motif for Gucci with a capsule menswear collection

Not many people would know that there are currently 22,705 songs in existence around the world that make reference to Gucci in the lyrics.  But that’s just one of the hidden pleasures to be found in the new Gucci Pineapple menswear collection.  The number itself is used as a signature throughout the new capsule offering, and plays to the light-hearted nature of story being told.  Of course, the real focus of Alessandro Michele’s latest narrative is the new pineapple emblem.

Retro styles are given contemporary interpretations and presented in a vibrant, yet understated, colour palette that is unmistakably Gucci.  Just in case you weren’t sure however, there is the oversized logo lettering on the front of the pale pink leather bomber jacket to remind you.  Or, the familiar GG Supreme pattern combined with the pineapple motif seen on the sneakers, bags and knitwear.

All the silhouettes are relaxed yet purposeful.  Chocolate brown corduroy trousers are dressed down with a hooded jacket with contrast sleeves coloured in an interpretation of the Italian House’s famous red and green Webbing.  A crisp long sleeve polo shirt dresses the trousers up and adds the twist of oversized pink and black striping.  Naturally, both the jacket and the polo shirt feature large pineapple and logo appliqués to the chest, just to make sure we’re keeping things nicely off-centre.

When the story touches on tailoring, the lines are clean and easy.  The raglan sleeves on the long trench coat smooth out the edges, while the single-breasted blazers in blue and black gingham checks hint at warm summer evenings with cool breezes.

The full context is brought life by the location the collection is shot in.  The retro décor of The Colony Hotel in Palm Beach, Florida, presents the perfect canvas on which to paint this picture.  Many of the colours and patterns on the walls and the floors directly complement the shades in see in the clothes and accessories.  It’s these unique backdrops the hotel offers embellish the underlying concept behind Michele’s new collection: vintage inspirations reimagined through talented modern eyes and presented with a knowing smile can create something special.
