Fendi Resort 2020 Review

Fendi looks back to the 80s for their 2020 Resort collection

For Fendi there has always been a subtle subtext of strength and confidence underwriting their interpretations of femininity and womanhood in their collections.  Herr Lagerfeld understood this right up until his untimely passing earlier this year.  In fact, it was his grand design.  He’d been at the head of the italian fashion house since the late 1960s and it was his artistry that helped to define the quintessential ‘Fendi Woman’; a legacy that has smoothly passed into the hands of Silvia Venturini Fendi.  With her Resort 2020 collection there’s a strong sense of continuity and familiarity that fortunately doesn’t feel safe or complacent.  Instead it feels vibrant, forward thinking and like a sure step into a new future.

Taking a large measure of inspiration from the capable but stylish eponymous central character from the classic eighties mob thriller Gloria, played by Gena Rowlands, the collection features some exquisitely tailored silhouettes that look both sharp and supremely comfortable at the same time.  Rowland’s wardrobe for the movie was designed by Emanuel Ungaro and, like Gloria, Venturini Fendi’s ideal woman won’t be shying away from bold eye-catching colours next summer either.

While the luxurious black leather v-neck dress with the oversized bow detailing at the nape of the neck offers something sophisticated for the evening, it’s outfits like the perforated pink leather jumpsuit that really catches the eye.  Oversized zoot suit style pleated trousers, held in place by exquisitely slim Fendi belts, form the basis for many of the looks in the show, epitomising the marriage between tailoring and comfort the house is known  for.

Just in case lounging is going to make up the better part of your Resort 2020 summer, there are even gloriously flowing silk pyjama suits for you to spend your days in, making that transition from the home to a quick lunch in the sun positively seamless.  Of course, pyjama suits don’t offer much in the way of storage space if you need a purse to pay for that lunch but Fendi comes to the rescue again with a range of gorgeous signature bags – like our longtime favourite, the Baguette – to complete all the looks.  Herr Lagerfeld would be proud.
