Dior Cruise 2022

Dior sets its sights on Athens as the backdrop for the new Cruise 2022 collection

The Panathenaic Stadium in Athens was the stage for a spectacular Dior Cruise 2022 show.  Set on a warm night, the cavernous stadium, lighting design and production levels set the perfect tone for the extensive collection that was to take over the charcoal Olympic running track.  Whites and neutrals dominated the collection’s colour pallet for the evening.  When the whites came they varied between the clean polar whites of the one shoulder, one sleeve cotton dress accessorised by equally polar contemporary knee-length boots and leather handbag, or white was coupled with deep space black – like the black and white striped poler-neck knit with perforated sleeves and presented with white shorts, shoes and socks.

The neutrals were warm, welcoming and flowing. The sheer pleated gown cinched at the waist with a wide gold belt featured romantic details like a scooped neck with an innovative construction to cap one shoulder.  Fittingly, it was a Grecian goddess look that played well on an Athenean stage back lit with fire.  Elsewhere, neutral knitted bibs emblazoned with the Christian Dior logo were teamed with wide-legged neutral all-over pleat trousers.

Of course, creative director Maria Grazia Chiuri punctuated her cruise collection with colour – just as the accompanying musical performance by Greek singer Ioanna Gika was punctuated by a spectacular extended fireworks display half way through the production.  The electric blue of the long sleeve bodysuit and drawstring shorts combination stood out against the dramatic backdrop with its stark white graphic print design.  Comfortable hoodies featured swathes of lush green and citrus yellow.  But, it was probably the metallics that caught the eye the most.  And when they came, they came in gold and silver to match the narrative of the night.  The gold leather jacket and shorts could almost be the lead singer’s off-stage look.  The dresses spoke to a more regal occasion, however.  Pieces like the one shoulder dress with dramatically long fringes from the hips and the sterling silver gown with the plunging neckline and an oversized houndstooth check pattern almost stole the show.

The main congratulations are reserved for the show itself.  As mentioned, the Dior 2022 cruise collection is extensive and Chiuri used the time that afforded her to take us beyond the clothes and completely submerge us into a fascinating overarching story being told.  Like all the best stage performances.
