Canali Menswear AW23 – Milan Fashion Week

When it comes to quintessential Italian style, Canali has been dressing the best of men around the globe for almost nine decades already.  Naturally, the same was also true of the beautiful AW23 collection unveiled at Milan Fashion Week over the weekend.   As the presentation revealed, the key to Canali’s coming winter revolves around the concepts of flexibility and multiplicity.  The ‘male wardrobe’ in the hands of the Italian luxury House is not the stiff and unyielding proposition it was once.  Now there’s an ease and nuance to the new aesthetics; perfectly exemplified in the next winter looks.

Of course, the quality was a given.  An Italian designer not supremely versed in artisanal fabrics and garment construction is a rare phenomenon indeed, and here those artistic skills were on full display.  Looks like the gorgeous checked and belted double-breasted half-length coat set the tone straight away.  The way the subtle blue in the check reflected the blue of the peak cap and trousers that accompanied it hinted at the little visual treats on offer for those with a keener eye and the desire to delve a little deeper.

The silhouettes projected comfort while the cuts, constructions and shaping exuded a quiet yet confident elegance.  Tan wool camel coats over chocolate brown single-breasted jackets, loose trousers and slip-on loafers gave new dimensions to colour-on-colour sensibilities.  Slouchy corduroy suits sported 50’s-style wide-legged trousers (sans turn-ups), and were worn with diamond pattern sweater-vests and roll-neck knits – fireside styling in the country won’t ever look so good.

Although, if you’d prefer to ‘Simon Templar’ it up a bit, the dual zip padded blouson jacket teamed with tapered lounge pants with elasticated cuffs, both in a really satisfying deep royal blue, could have been specially made to order.  Wool, cashmere, silk and organic cotton are just some of the canvases on which these pictures were drawn.

And almost by osmosis, this AW23 collection demonstrated the true desirability of multiplicity.  Different styles, different looks, different textures and materials, for work, evening or night – all one Canali.
