Molly Goddard SS24 – London Fashion Week
The London-based designer explores antiquity for LFW. By Magdalen Manning
Inspired by a mixture of vintage silhouettes, Georgian underskirts and Victorian christening gowns, the Molly Goddard SS24 collection at London Fashion Week evoked an air of hyper-real domesticity from times of the past. Influenced by the structure of vintage garments discovered in the treasures at the National Theatre costume hire, the soft romanticism of the catwalk came with Goddard’s modern curlicues, like exposed internal boning on dresses and frayed seams on lovingly faded denims.
Frills and ruffles repeated themselves in various guises throughout the collection, complemented by the dainty laced ballet flats and lace-up boots they were paired with. Goddard’s singular technical abilities found favour through grosgrain straps accompanying the on the bias-cut pin tucks and in the underwear detailing seen through delicate sheer fabrics.
An array of textures brought to life wadded cushioned bags and duvet dresses, while satin trim felted wool knits created dreamy spectacles amongst the contrasting narratives. The designer’s colour palette kept with neutral and nude shades on a base of black. Interspersed among this were old-fashioned upholstery prints and vibrant pastels tones for added layers of colour and dimension.
The styling, crafted by the Goddard’s sister Alice, reinforced the inspiration behind the collection, with cropped cardigans revealing minimal bralettes at one end of the scale, jostling for attention with the extravagant shapes and fairytale glamour at the other. This season, Molly Goddard SS24 invited us to look deeper than the superficial and presented us with a refined yet contemporary twist on the beautiful reminisces of yesteryear.
Everything challenged preconceived notions, but nothing was over-the-top or inaccessible. The wonderful technique on display, and the adaptation of traditional feminine lines for a new social media age, brought home everything we love about Goddard’s unique aesthetic vision.
