Michael Kors AW22 – New York Fashion Week Closing Show
Georgia Hambury looks back the the spectacular closing show for NYFW
For the show that recently closed New York Fashion Week, Michael Kors delivered its AW22 collection in what was the first catwalk at Terminal 5 Manhattan, a music venue established in New York a short distance from Kors’ native Long Island. Models high-stepped down the catwalk in ostentatious faux furs and sequinned gowns that featured asymmetrical necklines and playful cutouts. In true New York fashion, R&B artist Miguel provided a live soundtrack to the show. starting with a cover of Prince & The Revolution’s Raspberry Beret.
The collection featured autumnal tones that wrapped the cast in geometric cuts and chunky belts that reflected the multi-faceted experiences of New York night life. Many ensembles sparkled in their own way, such as the reflective leather and jewelled tones that mimicked the flashing lights of the city that never sleeps.
The collection itself yearned for the winter months and the brisk walks in the vibrant environments the city is renowned for. And, even though there were still vestiges of the summer warmth seen in the high-thigh splits and miniskirts, they matched the season’s palette, like rich oranges that developed into stark charcoals and deep velvety blacks. Strong, angular silhouettes are also going to be a feature of the Michael Kors winter, with powerful Grace Jones-esque structuring seen in the tailoring and coats with draped hoods.
Any night you’re in New York City is a night for names, and the notable ones on the catwalk, such as Emily Ratajkowski and Paloma Elsesser, mirrored the reality for the city. Commanding business attire, like the oversized double-breasted suit, or the metallic silver mini trench, created nostalgic echoes to the Wall Street era of the 80s – and the nightlife that came with it.
“For this show, I wanted to bring the excitement and energy of a night on the town to life—because I think right now, no matter where you are, we’re all craving that,” said Michael himself. Perhaps. But maybe we’re also just looking for an excuse to wear this collection.
