Ferrari SS24 – Milan Fashion Week

Rocco Iannone's new collection continues the motoring marque's foray into high fashion. By Atlanta McCann

To use an apt metaphor, creative director Rocco Iannone managed to take first place with his new Ferrari SS24 collection at Milan Fashion Week.  Entitled Power of Desire, Milan’s extravagant Teatro Alcione at the heart of the city served as the backdrop to match his intentions – ‘complex simplification and pure sublimation’.

The Ferrari brand is known for many things, but, in this context, it was emotion through design that was at the forefront.   Curved lines and rounded sleeves made for an organic and fluid range of motion as the cast traversed the racetrack-esque catwalk.  These intriguing aesthetic cues reoccurred throughout the designer’s repertoire – in familiar racing, workwear and tailoring codes from the archives.

Midriffs peeked out from between short jackets or cropped tops and asymmetric skirts or baggy jeans.  Bare chests were exposed beneath sublime fine gauze knitwear, while belted racing suits covered everything up and added zips, pockets and arm-length gloves.  Silhouettes were pushed over the edge to add a touch of volume to the story – dropped shoulders on denim jackets extended the sleeve beyond the hands in one iteration, or sleeves were puffed-up and pleated on leather blouses and dresses in another.

Iannone’s summer vision arrived presented in a graduated array of striking tones, consisting of fresh whites and neutrals, ink black, burnished amber, seductive flesh tones and, of course, vibrant Ferrari red.  Accessories like tinted windscreen-style visors played to the brand’s heritage, while camouflage perforations on leather resolved as the famous Prancing Horse logo upon closer inspection.  In other words, everything you would expect, but nothing like how you’d expect it.

It all came wrapped in eco-friendly fabrics like GRS certified wool, plongé leathers, and organic cottons and denims.  Taken altogether, Ferrari SS24 was a cavalcade of form, colour coordination and texture to cement Iannone’s particular creativity among high fashion’s higher echelons.
