CHANEL Pre AW23 Campaign
French actress and model Iman Perez is the new muse for AW23. By THE FALL
With the help of rising young French actress Iman Perez in front of camera, the new CHANEL Pre AW23 campaign expands the cultural influence of one of fashion’s most prestigious Maisons. Eclecticism is at the centre of Virginie Viard’s creative eye for the winter, and feeds into Perez’s own eclectic heritage and her nomadic lifestyle that spans Paris, Dakar and NYC.
“I’m so honoured that CHANEL and Virginie Viard have drawn inspiration from my lifestyle for this collection,” says Perez. “There’s nothing more personal than the way you dress. I’m of Spanish, Senegalese, German and French origin, and my style reflects that.” It’s not the only thing that reflects a heady mix of cultures and ideas in the the campaign.
Senegalese-born fashion photographer Malick Bodian is the man behind the lens, while French production crew Kourtrajmé handle the duties for the film clip. The story itself doubles down on the overall narrative by placing our muse in varied locations, like the Moulin Rouge, Galerie Vivienne or the quays of the Seine. The individual looks on display take it even further, with the masculine-feminine styles of the 70s blending with the urban hip hop culture of the 90s.
Street-borne baggy jeans and velvet or shearling jackets shot in warm colour sit comfortably alongside the chic femininity of a long coat and a sleeveless leather dress presented in cinematic black and white. The locations, the designs and the star all share a distinct visual dialogue between each other, with Bodian and Kourtrajmé acting as our translators in print and on screen.
“I love being able to embody different women, going from a very sensitive person to a very happy or very strong one,” continues Perez. As an actress, it shouldn’t come as any surprise. Her ease in front of the camera is obvious and with CHANEL Pre AW23, we now all have options for who we’d love to be this winter.
