adidas SPEZIAL SS22 Collection

Laurelle Laryea takes a look at the new capsule collection from the sportswear giant

The continuing fascination with the adidas SPEZIAL SS22 range is rooted in its connection to 70s/80s youth and football culture. Whether you’re an aficionado of the beautiful game or not, SPEZIAL incorporates those cues into a collection that works just as well for contemporary everyday wear. The latent vibe surrounding SPEZIAL has always been youthful, boyish, and buzzing with electronic or indie rock music. Most famously, the likes of former Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher has been a regular in front of the camera for the adidas off-shoot in recent years.

SPEZIAL founder Gary Aspden has always revered music in his vision. And, for this summer’s new collection, the brand travels to Todmorden, England – the hometown of the band Working Men’s Club and their frontman Syd Minsky-Sargent – for a jolt of British electronica to add to the campaign story and film.

The collection itself tailors classic styles to a modern audience. We have a fusion of 1970s aesthetics and functional, militaristic styles. Among the five new footwear silhouettes is an iteration of the familiar Adilette SPZL slide in an off-white colourway with black embossed Trefoil detailing and SPEZIAL branding. The ZX 620 SPZL recalls the well-known ZX 600 and ZX 555, but in a synthetic suede and with reflective accents for a contemporary and graphic look. The Warszawa SPZL continues the highly-regarded City Series. Featuring a maroon suede upper, canary yellow synthetic leather stripes, and a navy blue rubber outsole, the new sneaker is an iconic silhouette told in a modern colour story.

The Stapfen SPZL recalls a lesser known icon of the brand – a flat suede shoe featuring a unique rope lacing system, brown suede uppers with tonal overlays, and a gum rubber outsole. For a little icing on the cake, adidas has also brought back the Yabisah SPZL from its famous ‘Island Series,’ in a stylish revival of the classic running shoe.

The collection also dabbles outside of footwear and into apparel. A revised Beckenbauer tracksuit, the Marnach TT, with tonal black detailing and silicone badges offers a full SPEZIAL look. The headliner however, seen on Syd Minsky-Sargent in the accompanying campaign, is the peach Calavadella Jacket. Other selections, including polos, T-shirts and Portinax Shorts, offer layering options for the more transitional end to the season, and fit perfectly with the personal and unembellished story of the campaign – and your summer.
