That 70s Show – Tommy Hilfiger by Zendaya

Tommy Hilfiger continues their exciting celebrity collaborations with a new collection from the next Screen Queen, Zendaya

Studio 54, flower power, bell bottoms and free love – there’s certainly a lot of creative inspiration that can be drawn from the culture of the 1970s.  Even though rising superstar Zendaya was born way after that in 1992 that’s exactly what sparked her imagination when collaborating on her first collection with US fashion royalty, Tommy Hilfiger.  The final pieces unsurprisingly run the entire scope of 70s nostalgia – from the vivid psychedelic prints and the flared denim suits  to the gold lamé dresses and shirts with oversized collars.  Most of all the collection invokes the fun, electricity and sheer excitement of the era.

To underscore the period narrative of the collection Tommy and Zendaya descended on Paris on March 2nd to pay homage to the iconic 1973 Battle of Versailles fashion show.  This was the event famous for the American and European designers of the time going ‘head-to-head’ with alternating shows to raise money for the restoration of the Palace of Versailles.  However, there were no battle lines drawn this time.  The 1400 guests packed into the Théâtre des Champs-Élysées watched supermodels of a bygone era, like Grace Jones and Pat Cleveland who walked the original 1973 show, chop it up with today’s successors like Winnie Harlow and Jourdan Dunn.  In fact, there were many notable ‘firsts’ for the show.  There were a total of 59 models walking, aged from 18 all the way up to 70 (we see you Grace Jones), every size and shape of a women’s body was represented and all the models were women of colour.  We definitely are in a brand new world!  And, yes, there was a roller-disco afterparty complete with giant glitterball to enjoy.

The whole production was part of Hilfiger’s TOMMYNOW experiential platform, where the items on the catwalk were immediately available across their ‘See Now, Buy Now’ ecosystem of shoppable channels covering 70 countries.  We’re going to make a bold prediction that once Zendaya is in full global promotion for the release of this summer’s Spider-Man: Far From Home sequel Tommy Hilfiger by Zendaya will be covering her back in front of all the cameras.  Something that’s guaranteed to make her one of the stand-out stars of this year’s blockbuster season – in more ways than one.
