Hollywood superstars team up for the premiere of a new campaign film. By THE FALL
On Monday 16th Oct, CHANEL will debut the next blockbuster instalment of their collaboration with superstar ambassador Timothée Chalamet for BLEU DE CHANEL. And, this time they’re upping the culture quotient with a campaign film directed by Hollywood legend Martin Scorsese. The two giants of the industry are coming together for the first time ‘to create a contemporary picture of free, daring, and determined self-discovery’.
Scorsese himself is no stranger to CHANEL, having directed his first campaign for BLUE DE CHANEL back in 2010. “The world has changed. There’s another aspect to celebrity in a way. Which is even more extreme than 10 or 15 years ago,” says Scorsese of the impetus behind his new short film. The director’s vision brings a fraught dialogue between the excesses of fame and the search for authenticity to the silver screen, with Chalamet manifesting that tortured reality in words and actions.
‘Find your blue, find yourself,’ reads the campaign message. It’s a sentiment that speaks to the kind of bold forward thinking that saw Chalamet tapped as the face of a CHANEL fragrance in the first place. The new film is shot in stark black and white, with urgent flashes of blue reinforcing a sense of optimism and hope in amongst the angst that comes with global celebrity status. With still images from the incomparable Mario Sorrenti capturing the quiet idiosyncrasies of the man, the Maison’s new proposal embodies the convention-defying conviction championed by none other than Gabrielle Chanel herself:
“BLEU DE CHANEL has just the right amount of conviction and intensity to represent a man who refuses to be typecast,” says Olivier Polge, CHANEL In-House Perfumer-Creator. “A man who dismisses facades and who is not afraid to let vulnerability show through his tough, disarming exterior.” Gabrielle would no doubt have been very proud.
